Mark 14

The Plot to Kill Jesus

1 aIt was now two days before bthe Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes cwere seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, 2for they said, “Not during the feast, dlest there be an uproar from the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

3 eAnd while he was at fBethany in the house of Simon the leper,
Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13
as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
and igiven to the poor.” And they jscolded her.
6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7For kyou always have the poor with you, and whenever lyou want, you can do good for them. But myou will not always have me. 8 nShe has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand ofor burial. 9And truly, I say to you, wherever pthe gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told qin memory of her.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

10 rThen sJudas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, twent to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to ubetray him.

The Passover with the Disciples

12 vAnd on wthe first day of Unleavened Bread, when they xsacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13And he sent ytwo of his disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, z‘The Teacher says, Where is aamy guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15And he will show you aba large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 acAnd when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18And as they were reclining at table and eating, adJesus said, Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, aeone who is eating with me.” 19They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20He said to them, “It is afone of the twelve, agone who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21For the Son of Man goes ahas it is written of him, but aiwoe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ajIt would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

22 akAnd as they were eating, he took bread, and after alblessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, Take; amthis is my body.” 23And he took a cup, and when he had angiven thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24And he said to them, aoThis is my apblood of the

covenant, which is poured out for armany.
25Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

26 asAnd when they had sung a hymn, atthey went out to authe Mount of Olives. 27And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will avstrike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28But after I am raised up, awI will go before you to Galilee.” 29 axPeter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30And ayJesus said to him, Truly, I tell you, this very night, before azthe rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31But bahe said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32 bbAnd they went bcto a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray.” 33And he took with him bdPeter and James and John, and began beto be greatly distressed and troubled. 34And he said to them, bfMy soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and bgwatch.”
Or keep awake; also verses 37, 38
35And going a little farther, he fell on the ground biand prayed that, if it were possible, bjthe hour might pass from him. 36And he said, bkAbba, Father, blall things are possible for you. Remove bmthis cup from me. bnYet not what I will, but what you will.” 37And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 boWatch and bppray that you may not bqenter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39And again he went away and prayed, brsaying the same words. 40And again he came and found them sleeping, for bstheir eyes were very heavy, and btthey did not know what to answer him. 41And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? buIt is enough; bvthe hour has come. bwThe Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 bxAnd immediately, while he was still speaking, byJudas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, bzRabbi!” And he cakissed him. 46And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47But one of those who stood by drew his cbsword and struck the servant
Greek bondservant
of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 cdDay after day I was with you in the temple ceteaching, and you did not seize me. But cflet the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 cgAnd they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51And a young man followed him, with nothing but cha linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Council

53 ciAnd cjthey led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 ckAnd clPeter had followed him at a distance, cmright into cnthe courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with cothe guards and cpwarming himself at the fire. 55Now the chief priests and the whole council
Greek Sanhedrin
were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.
56 crFor many bore false witness against him, but their testimony csdid not agree. 57And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 ctWe heard him say, cuI will destroy this temple cvthat is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, cwnot made with hands.’” 59Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”
Or Have you no answer to what these men testify against you?
61But cyhe remained silent and made no answer. czAgain the high priest asked him, “Are you dathe Christ, the Son of dbthe Blessed?” 62And Jesus said, I am, and dcyou will see the Son of Man ddseated at the right hand of Power, and decoming with the clouds of heaven.” 63And the high priest dftore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64You have heard dghis blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they dhall condemned him as dideserving death. 65 djAnd some began dkto spit on him and dlto cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him dmwith blows.

Peter Denies Jesus

66 dnAnd as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67and seeing Peter dowarming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway
Or forecourt
and dqthe rooster crowed.
Some manuscripts omit  and the rooster crowed
69And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72And immediately the rooster crowed dsa second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, dtBefore the rooster crows twice, you will dudeny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Mark 15

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

1 dwAnd as soon as it was morning, the chief priests dxheld a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And dythey bound Jesus and dzled him away and eadelivered him over to ebPilate. 2 ecAnd Pilate asked him, edAre you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, eeYou have said so.” 3And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4And Pilate again asked him, ef“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5But Jesus egmade no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

6 ehNow at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7And among the rebels in prison, who had eicommitted murder ejin the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he perceived that ekit was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with elthe man you call the King of the Jews?” 13And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14And Pilate said to them, “Why? emWhat evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having enscourged
A Roman judicial penalty, consisting of a severe beating with a multi-lashed whip containing imbedded pieces of bone and metal
Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 epAnd the soldiers led him away inside eqthe palace (that is, erthe governor’s headquarters),
Greek  the praetorium
and they called together the whole etbattalion.
Greek cohort; a tenth of a Roman legion, usually about 600 men
17And they clothed him in eva purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18And they began to salute him, ewHail, King of the Jews!” 19And they were striking his head with a reed and exspitting on him and eykneeling down in homage to him. 20And when they had ezmocked him, they stripped him of fathe purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they fbled him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21 fcAnd they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 fdAnd they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23And they offered him wine mixed with femyrrh, but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him and ffdivided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25And fgit was the third hour
That is, 9 a.m.
when they crucified him.
26And the inscription of the charge against him read, fi“The King of the Jews.” 27And with him they crucified two fjrobbers, fkone on his right and one on his left.
Some manuscripts insert verse 28: And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “He was numbered with the transgressors”
29And fmthose who passed by derided him, fnwagging their heads and saying, foAha! fpYou who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, fq“He saved others; frhe cannot save himself. 32Let fsthe Christ, ftthe King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may fusee and believe.” fvThose who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

33And when the sixth hour
That is, noon
had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
That is, 3 p.m.
34And at the ninth hour Jesus fycried with a loud voice, fzEloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36And someone ran and filled a sponge with gasour wine, put it on a reed gband gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37And Jesus gcuttered a loud cry and gdbreathed his last. 38And gethe curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 gfAnd when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he
Some manuscripts insert cried out and
breathed his last, he said, ghTruly this man was the Son
Or a son
of God!”

40There were also gjwomen looking on gkfrom a distance, among whom were glMary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and gmSalome. 41When he was in Galilee, they followed him and gnministered to him, and there were also many other women who gocame up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 gpAnd when evening had come, since it was gqthe day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea, gra respected member of the council, who gswas also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.
Or  Pilate wondered whether he had already died
And summoning guthe centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.
45And when he learned from gvthe centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46And Joseph
Greek he
bought gxa linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and gylaid him in a tomb gzthat had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled haa stone against the entrance of the tomb.
47 hbMary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

Mark 16

The Resurrection

1 hc, hdWhen the Sabbath was past, heMary Magdalene, hfMary the mother of James, and hgSalome hhbought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away hithe stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled backhjit was very large. 5And hkentering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, hldressed in hma white robe, and hnthey were alarmed. 6And he said to them, ho“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that hphe is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, hqjust as he told you.” 8And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

[Some of the earliest manuscripts do not include 16:9–20.]
Some manuscripts end the book with 16:8; others include verses 9–20 immediately after verse 8. At least one manuscript inserts additional material after verse 14; some manuscripts include after verse 8 the following: But they reported briefly to Peter and those with him all that they had been told. And after this, Jesus himself sent out by means of them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. These manuscripts then continue with verses 9–20

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

9[[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, hshe appeared first to htMary Magdalene, hufrom whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 hvShe went and told those who had been with him, hwas they hxmourned and wept. 11But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they hywould not believe it.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples

12 hzAfter these things iahe appeared in ibanother form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. 13 icAnd they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

The Great Commission

14Afterward idhe appeared ieto the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their ifunbelief and ighardness of heart, because ihthey had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15And he said to them, iiGo into all the world and ijproclaim the gospel to ikthe whole creation. 16 ilWhoever believes and is imbaptized inwill be saved, but iowhoever ipdoes not believe will be condemned. 17And iqthese signs will accompany those who believe: irin my name they will cast out demons; isthey will speak in new tongues; 18 itthey will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; iuthey will lay their hands ivon the sick, and they will recover.”

19So then the Lord Jesus, iwafter he had spoken to them, ixwas taken up into heaven and iysat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while izthe Lord worked with them and confirmed jathe message jbby accompanying signs.]]
